Structural Engineers - what we do

Structural Engineering Design & Documentation

The key to the successful delivery of any building project, large or small, is a structured approach to the design function and a flexible, proactive attitude during the construction phase.

During the schematic design phase, the building form, functionality, basic structural system and construction materials are determined. Alternative framing schemes and construction methods are analyzed and evaluated. We assist in preparing cost estimates and the feasibility of the project is established. We work closely with the project team to refine and consolidate the schematic design to meet budgetary and time constraints.

In the design development phase we work to further refine the schematic design, if necessary, to finalize structural framing and support systems, material selection and construction methods.

The detailed design phase encompasses final design of structural systems and components and the preparation of construction drawings and specifications.

Our involvement in the construction phase is tailored to the requirements of the client or the nature of the construction contract. We are often retained on ‘as required’ or casual basis to ensure compliance with the design intent. Alternatively we have undertaken detailed supervision on a day to day basis.

Review of Peer Designs

The questions commonly asked are: is the proposed structural system functional? and does it contain elements of over-design? Can the building be constructed at less cost without compromising quality? The “how-why” intuitive logic approach to enhancing the value of projects is not new and it works. In consultation with the client, architect and builder, we undertake an independent and systematic examination of the structural concepts and detailed design of a particular project or construction method to identify and remove unnecessary expenditures. A concise report, often identifying alternatives, is then presented to the client.

Forensic Engineering

When failures occur, it is essential for clients to be able to clearly define their position with respect to their liability or alternatively their non-liability. They need solid support to effectively and confidently communicate their position, particularly where property damage or injury occurs.

Our experience is extensive; it includes but is not confined to investigation of building frame and building component failure, foundation failure, wind and fire damage. Our approach to determine the cause or causes of failure is systematic and thorough. We are cognizant of the need to present complex technical subject matter in matter in clear and concise language, particularly where it is required to support litigation.

Structural Engineering Feasibility Studies

A feasibility study can be considered as a cost-effective tool which provides all the information necessary to demonstrate the viability and soundness of a project or construction method. We have carried out numerous studies that encompass a broad range of buildings for our clients to provide them with a sound basis for investment decisions or to assist in the preparation of funding submissions.

Structural Design Checking and Certification

We undertake an independent review of structural designs prepared by our peers to assess their compliance with national industry standards, codes and regulations. Often, we collaborate with the designer to optimize designs in situations where it can be demonstrated that functionality can be improved and cost savings achieved.
